Ed Hanway

Faith in the Future

Ed Hanway currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Faith in the Future, a nonprofit established in 2012 by a group of visionary leaders – from business, education, philanthropy and civic life to save four schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that were slated to close due to declining enrollment. These leaders realized that closing schools might provide short-term relief but would not address the long-term viability of the Archdiocesan high schools. In a groundbreaking decision, the Archdiocese transferred the management of 17 high schools and 4 schools of special education to Faith in the Future – which operates independent of the Archdiocese. This commitment to Catholic education is the driving force of FIF.

In its first six years, Faith in the Future boasts the following areas of progress:

• Their network of schools operates on a break-even basis at minimum.
• New strategic plans are in place at each school, customized for that school’s unique opportunities.
• Every school now has its own board of specified jurisdiction, responsible for school culture, budgeting and fundraising; the schools of special education have formed a single board to support their distinctive mission.
• Schools have been energized with new leaders who bring an entrepreneurial and innovative approach to education and a commitment to academic excellence.
• FIF schools raised $19.1 million in FY 2018, while FIF raised an additional $3.7 million to support its mission.

The most important metric for Faith in the Future is student success. As Catholic schools, the organization embraces its mission to educate servant leaders prepared to meet today’s global challenges. SAT scores have been rising across the network, and 93% of FIF students continue their education at a two-year (12%) or four-year (81%) college. FIF students embrace a commitment to serving others through meaningful volunteer work. Extracurricular activities and athletics develop well-rounded young adults.

In addition to his role as chairman of Faith in the Future, Ed Hanway is Chairman Emeritus of Cigna Corporation and has been active in a wide range of issues and initiatives associated with children’s health, education and international business. He currently serves as a Board of Director at BLOCS, on the board of Marsch & McLennan Companies, Inc. as well as on the board of advisors of the March of Dimes Foundation, and on the board of trustees of Loyola University of Maryland and Drexel Neumann Academy. He is a former board member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and was a member of the Business Roundtable and the Eisenhower Exchange. A member of the Pennsylvania and American Institutes of Certified Public Accountants, Hanway graduated from Loyola College of Baltimore (BA, 1974) and Widener University (MBA, 1984).
