The No Child
Left Behind Act, the Charter Schools Program, the DC Opportunity
Scholarship Program and other federal initiatives have expanded
educational options for disadvantaged students on a national scale.
New initiatives at the state and local levels have also increased
opportunities for parents to choose among public and private school
options. In fact, there are now 24 programs in 13 states providing
financial assistance in the form of vouchers, tax credits, and
tax deductions. There were only seven such programs a decade ago.
The U.S. Department
of Education’s Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
and the Office of Innovation and Improvement will conduct a regional
summit on March 13, 2008, to highlight educational innovations
throughout the northeast. The summit will showcase educational
options at the local level and seek to empower community leaders
and parents with information, ideas, and successful models that
can be replicated elsewhere.
This summit
will bring together parent advocates, public and private school
representatives, state education officials and faith-based and
community leaders from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey to
share educational innovations going on in the region.
