HELPING BUDDING SCIENTISTS
by Christie L. Chicoine, Staff Writer, The Catholic Standard & Times

Christmas—in the form of a $1,450 high school science scholarship—is coming early for 20 archdiocesan high school seniors who have demonstrated academic merit in science.

The F.C. Haab Science Scholarships are funded by the F.C. Haab Company, Inc., a business based in Philadelphia. They will be presented through BLOCS (Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools) at its annual award ceremony at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov.14, at the Archdiocesan Office Center in Center City.

“It couldn’t have happened at a better time, because my father was out of work for a little while on disability,” said Alex S. Cifelli of Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote. “It’s a real relief to my parents this year.” The 17-year-old senior is considering a career in quantum physics.

The timing of the scholarship was also good for Brianna M. Brophy of St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia. “I was just really happy,” Brophy said, adding, “I’m very thankful for it.” She is considering a future career as a physician’s assistant.
